SURFING THE LAGOON OF NEW CALEDONIA

Surf in high sea!

You don’t necessarily think of New Caledonia as a surf destination? Well, you should! Though Grande Terre and the isles are sheltered from swells and rollers by the barrier reef, once you get passed this natural rampart, perfect waves abound! So unlike most surfing spots, you’ll need a boat to reach New Caledonia’s best barrels and crests. New Caledonia is not just a surfing destination but also a windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddling place.

THE ESSENTIAL

Enjoy peaceful surfing rides in New Caledonia

1

Surfing the barrier reef is a unique experience, not suited for the weak hearted! Let the adrenaline work its magic and enjoy riding the thrilling border between lagoon and ocean. New Caledonia’s surfing spots are just as uncrowded as they are exceptional. Roche Percée in Bourail is the only mainland spot and the most well-known. The beach is hit by swell that rushes in through a gap in the barrier reef. Here you can enjoy leisurely rides.

Inescapables

New Caledonia, host of surf hotspots

Activities which are on the roll

If you want to brave the ocean, you will have to get to the barrier reef. Hot spots are located by Dumbéa pass, Bourail and Ilot Ténia. Many surf camps organize excursions which include accommodation and meals. These camps are great to meet local surfers who will gladly share their secret spots with you. Gaps, channels and passes can be found over a 700-kilometer stretch of barrier reef.

Windsurfing

On the lagoon, windsurfing remains the most popular water sport. Every day, around Nouméa bays, colorful sails paint the horizon as windsurfers speed by like a school of flying fish. Over the recent years, kite-surfing has gained great popularity.

Other water activities

Stand up paddling is becoming an increasingly popular water sport. Easy to practice, even for beginners, stand up paddling is a relaxing way of discovering the lagoon. If you want to cover long distances, kayaking is a great option, whether you’re an amateur or professional. Jet skiing also remains in vogue. Many professionals offer excursions on the lagoon, departing from Noumea and Bourail.

An idyllic environment

Noumea is definitely the hot spot for windsurfing enthusiast. They love to gather in Anse Vata where there is a perfect wind converge. Here locals and visitors alike can enjoy an idyllic environment to practice their favorite activity. Many competitions take place throughout the year, as New Caledonia remains a reputed location for board sports.
