Surfing in New Caledonia

Surfing on open water!

You don’t think of New Caledonia as a surfing destination? Think again! Off the shores of Grande Terre, you will enjoy memorable surfing sessions on open water. Discover unusual spots that are breathtaking and exhilarating. Get ready for the ride of your life!

The essential

Caledonian waves

1

Unless the west wind blows strongly enough, you won’t get any surfing action in New Caledonia’s cove beaches… in that case, hop on a boat and head to the coral reef. Offshore is where the best surfing conditions can be found because the reef breaks the ocean’s surf, hence greatly diminishing the size and speed of waves within the lagoon. Locals will gladly share their favorite spots with you. The best surf usually occurs around the reef’s drop-offs.

Surfing along the coral reef is a unique riding experience, so get ready for some adrenalin-pumping action! Cherry on the cake: New Caledonian surf spots are delightfully uncrowded.

Greats spots for surfing

La Roche Percée

La Roche Percée, located in Bourail, is a famous spot where beginners can practice safely. Picture a long stretch of gray sand washed by azure water. The beach also attracts many locals for a picnic or a Sunday stroll. Waves are small but appropriate for beginners.

Off the shores of Bourail

From Nekweta surf camp, riders can take a boat in order to reach the Bourail Pass and enjoy sensational surf sessions.

Ténia Pass

Ténia Pass (also known as Saint-Vincent Pass) is located 45 minutes away from Nouméa. Departing from Port Ouenghi in Bouraké, you will head towards Ténia islet around which powerful lefts can be enjoyed. Barrel amateurs will be thrilled! For a memorable surf session or a weekend of camping, Ténia is a must!

A tight surf community

In New Caledonia, surfing is often a family affair. As it is often the case worldwide, the local surf community is very tight-knit. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with clubs that will gladly introduce you to less touristic spots such as Dumbéa False Pass or Ouano. Contact Xtrem Surf Club, the New Caledonian Surf League or Sup and Go.
